Every year our red maple across the driveway is the last to turn colors (it began only a couple of days ago), and one of the last to drop its leaves (should be good for another week or so, depending on wind, rain, etc.).
This morning, with the early morning sun coming up on it, the leaves seemed to glow a deep red and orange. What a beauty that tree is!
It is always with a tinge of sadness that we see it turn colors, however, as that is also the sure sign that autumn is nearly over, and winter will soon be here. Of course, the prospect of winter brings its own pleasures!
First, we have Sparkle Weekend, the first weekend in December, with parade, festival, L.L. Bean's Northern Lights, and more! Then there is all of the traditional Christmas shopping and events, followed by New Year's Eve and the huge celebration to ring in the new year. And then we start all over again, with January and snow and all that can be done with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and more!
All that, from one little tree!

Peak Foliage in Maine
Tomorrow (October 13) the final foliage report of the season will be issued. It appears that the peak foliage for the Maine coast will be pretty much on schedule.
While it first seemed that the foliage started early this year, like most all the other seasonal changed did, it has stretched out nicely, as you can see in the adjacent image from last week's foliage report.
As of last week's report, the area of the coast around Freeport, Brunswick, and neighboring areas were already beautiful, with brilliant hues of yellow and red contrasting with the vibrant greens of the evergreen trees!
We have seen a bit of rain and wind, both of which tend to knock down the colorful leaves, but as of Columbus Day there were still plenty of leaves and lots of color everywhere.
One thing that always seems peculiar is that within a region, different spots turn at different times. There is a spot not far from Brewster House Bed & Breakfast where the leaves were all at peak weeks ago, and now their leaves are long gone. At the same time, down a little back road, there are spots just now coming into their peak.
These are just some of the things that make discovering the beautiful areas part of the joy of visiting Maine!

Make Freeport Your Destination!
At Brewster House we recently had an opportunity to host a photographer for a travel magazine, Steve Levine who was here on behalf of Destinations Travel magazine.
Steve was very interested in Maine, in Freeport, and in Brewster House. While he was here, he visited local eateries and sightseeing destinations, and found lovely photo opportunities wherever he went. You can read more about his travels on his blog.
In addition to featuring Brewster House in the article, Destinations Travel magazine also produced a "Sunday Drives" application - a downloadable app which provides a complete itinerary for the drive through Maine, including a stop a Brewster House.
This was a really fun experience for us, and we certainly hope you browse the article and/or check out the app, and then make plans for your next trip to Maine!
